AVIOM‘S MH10F MOVES BROADCAST AUDIO AT MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS

Aviom‘s MH10f Fiber Merger Hub made its high-profile debut moving live broadcast audio at the recent MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas.

The Vegas hotel-nightclub that hosted the star-studded extravaganza has a sizable complement of Aviom Pro64 Series products already installed, including a dozen 6416dio Digital I/O Modules as tie lines. The MH10f Merger Hub allowed MTV engineers and installer Audio Analysts to connect the venue’s 12 6416dio modules via fiber to broadcast locations over long distances.

The MH10f Merger Hub is designed to merge and distribute A-Net® data streams and provide a host of professional features to make audio networking with Pro64 Series products easy to set up and configure in multiple professional audio environments.

The MH10f offers unprecedented flexibility and simplicity in system design with features and performance created specifically for networking and distributing audio. The MH10f holds 10 bidirectional A-Net® ports. Eight ports use EtherCon RJ45 connectors, while the remaining two hold SFP slots.

The 10-port MH10f Merger Hub supports parallel connections in a Pro64 audio network with integrated fiber optic connectivity. In Pro64 systems running in Auto Mode, the Merger Hub creates a single network stream, which is redistributed out all 10 ports. This ensures that all 64 audio channels are available throughout the network, regardless of the physical location of any audio input or output. Channels can be physically located off any combination of the 10 ports, even through multiple mergers.

In a Manual Mode system, the Merger Hub accommodates three preset configurations, allowing users to optimize the way each point merges and distributes audio channels. Each configuration preserves the bidirectionality of the system, even as inputs are separated physically off various legs of a hub.

The MH10f can also be used to provide the protection of a backup cable for main runs, as in a digital snake. The Merger Hub will also merge Aviom‘s Virtual Data Cable™ data, allowing Pro64 devices to send and share control data effortlessly over long cable distances (up to 400ft/120m between devices).

FILM MIXER JAIME BAKSHT CHOOSES SSL C300 HD FOR NEW FACILITY, ASTRO STUDIOS

Jaime Baksht, one of the top film dubbing mixers in Mexico City, has selected a Solid State Logic C300 HD Master Studio System for Astro Studios, a new, ground-up facility in which he is a partner.

Astro Studios, scheduled to open in December, will feature the largest C300 HD to date, a two-operator, 48-fader, 512-channel console. With this C300 HD, Astro will be a world-class facility capable of meeting mainstream feature film mixing demands.

“The productions we are working on have been getting larger, so we needed something that can help us accommodate increasing requirements,” says Baksht, who was recently nominated for a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award for his work on the acclaimed Pan‘s Labyrinth, Guillermo del Toro‘s gothic fairy tale set in Franco‘s Spain.

“This C300 will have a lot of inputs,” Baksht, a longtime SSL user, continues. “The DAW control is also very important, and the C300 HD sounds wonderful! Over the years, I have worked on SSL‘s 8000 G Series, the Avant, and then an Avant Plus console. This is a completely new system from SSL, and when SSL has a new system, I know it‘s going to be very, very good.”

Designed for the full spectrum of film and post-production applications, the C300 HD Master Studio System is a compact, assignable console for fast and efficient sweetening and mix creation. The C300 HD fully addresses the requirements of non-linear film and HDTV audio production, delivering the ultimate in operational efficiency in a cost-effective, scalable solution.

The C300‘s upgrade to “HD” was announced at this year‘s NAB Convention. Key upgrades include:

• Tri-Level Sync Support

• Serial Control of HD VTRs

• Enhanced 96kHz feature set with up to 16 channel monitoring

• 3 or 4 Channel Side/Rear Surround Panning

• Pec/Direct Recorder Control

• Extended DAW Control with SoftKey keyboard commands

• Tilting center screen option

• Improved Center Section GUI with larger Time Code display, 32 full resolution meters and extended Mix Pass List display with 10 levels of undo

• Enhanced Automation with new Auto Fill Function, Master ALL Safe (Protect) Function

• Settings Libraries for EQ and Dynamics

• Optional 4 port MADI daughter card

The C300 HD integrates DAW control using techniques successfully pioneered with SSL‘s AWS 900+ Analogue Workstation System. This brings the workstation into the console allowing unparalleled interaction between console and DAW. Automation developed from the C200 Digital Production Console provides complete real and non-real time control over the console‘s powerful signal processing. This allows operators to slow down fast moves to a more manageable pace, or even set up whole scenes with the press of a locate key. This saves massive amounts of time yet also delivers the subtle control required to satisfy the most demanding producers or directors.

Baksht recently spent three days at SSL‘s Oxford, UK headquarters with Ron Lagerlof of Visioneering Design, the design and integration firm commissioned for Astro Studios, to finalize the C300 HD‘s specifications. “I don‘t think there is anything else around that can compete with the C300 HD,” says Baksht. “Other consoles are not an option–not for me. The support of SSL has been great throughout the entire process.”

George Horton, Solid State Logic Western Regional Manager, remarks, “Jaime Baksht has enjoyed a 15-year relationship with SSL. It is great to see Astro Studios choose the C300 HD for the new facility.”
