BRAD PAISLEY AMPED FOR LACHAPELL AUDIO‘S 992 TLS PREAMPLIFIER

NEW YORK, NY, OCTOBER 1, 2007 - Richard Barrow, engineer on Brad Paisley‘s last five albums on Arista Nashville/Sony BMG, recently teamed up with the country star and his producer, Frank Rogers, at the Castle Studio in Franklin, TN to track sessions for his upcoming project.

Due to the collection of guitars that were used on the project, a preamplifier was needed that would capture a variety of different tones and musical feels; LaChapell‘s 992 TLS was chosen. The 992 focused on tracking the acoustic guitar — specifically because it can be challenge to capture — in a way that sounds natural and also fits well with the other instruments.

“The thing that I loved most about LaChapell‘s 992 was its sonic flexibility,” said Richard Barrow, engineer. “We used it on all of Brad’s acoustic guitars, and whatever he played, whether it was an Everett or old Gibson, sounded wonderful. On ballads I could get a nice clean texture with an open top end and on a song with more tempo you could crank down on it and the guitar would really gain mass and energy without feeling choked.”

LaChapell Model 992 TLS is a transformer-less input design utilizing twin (matched) 400v ASC caps along with two USA made 6072‘s per channel. This configuration provides >50dB of gain (usually about 52db) with a typical non-weighted EIN of -114 to -116dB. By utilizing the Jensen JT-115k input transformer and two ECC803/12AX7 vacuum tubes per channel, this configuration is able to provide >74dB of gain (usually about 76dB…) with a typical non-weighted EIN of -125dB referencing 150ohm. All other design elements are the same.

“LaChapell‘s 992 offers several high-end features that are rare on other preamps, such as the channel mute and being able to switch off the meters,” continued Barrow. “I also really liked the look and feel of the controls. When I grabbed one, it didn’t feel like it might wiggle off like a lot of new gear these days. It was solid, just like it sounded.”
