Litchfield Jazz Camp (est. 1997), recently featured in the JazzTimes Education Guide, TIME Magazine and on CNN, announces a two-week intensive — Jazz Production and Recording Engineering, to be held from July 6 - 18. Last summer the camp held a small pilot program that was so well received the course has been formally added to the regular classes available at the 2008 Litchfield Jazz Camp.

Jazz Production and Recording Engineering will be taught by Ed Tetreault and Paul Bollenback. Mr. Tetreault is the Manager of Peabody Conservatory Recording Arts & Sciences. He holds a BS in Audio Engineering Technology from the University of Hartford and a MA in Recording and Production from Peabody Conservatory. Mr. Bollenback is a world-renowned jazz guitarist who has performed with Gary Bartz, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Joey DeFrancesco, Joe Locke, and many others. He teaches at Queens College, the New School and Peabody Conservatory and has been teaching at the Litchfield Jazz Camp since 1999. He also has his own jazz record label - Elefant Dreams.

Jazz Production and Recording Engineering is a hands-on recording seminar for musicians and aspiring recording engineers. The course is a “two-week miracle” where students record student musician combos and finish with a completed CD, touching on everything in between. Students will learn both how to record and how to produce a jazz album. They will learn how to choose material for an album, basic “on the spot” arranging tools, how to run a recording session in order to get the best out of the musicians and how to make the best use of studio time. Students will also learn practical problem-solving for recording situations, tips on how much can be done in your own home (editing, mixing, and overdubbing), how to choose the song order and many other “insider” recording studio techniques and tricks.

The course uses a Digidesign Pro Tools system with a Digi 003 interface. Using a dual quad-core Mac Pro for processing, the Pro Tools system is augmented with high-end plug-ins from Waves, Antares, and IK Multimedia and provides an extremely powerful host-based multitrack recording and mixing platform. Microphones for the course are provided by Shure and are supplemented with microphones from Neumann, Sennheiser, AKG, Royer, and Audix. The studio itself is equipped to handle four different cue mixes and can support up to 16 pairs of headphones. Other equipment used includes Mic Pres by Millenia Media, Joe Meek, ART, Mackie HR 824 studio Monitors and Samson C-Que Headphone amplifiers.
