Drummer Boy Sound “Hoop It Up” with Dynacord Cobra

VIEW STORY WITH PHOTOS HERE

Miami‘s Drummer Boy Sound, 99 JAMZ WEDR, Powerade, and the City of Miami Gardens recently teamed up to sponsor and host the national touring HOOP IT UP 3 on 3 basketball challenge at Calder Race track in Miami Gardens, Florida. DBS deployed their portable powerhouse Dynacord Cobra line array system for the event, with additional top notch equipment from Electro-Voice, Midas, and Klark Teknik.

The event included a host of local and national R&B and Hip Hop artists, including Ray Lavender (Interscope Records), ACE with DJ Khaled, and Urban Mystic (Sobe Entertainment), to name a few. The event was hosted by radio personality Mike B (99 Jamz WEDR) and DBS‘ very own VP of Marketing and Development, Tangela Cummings, AKA “Lady DBS”. The banging bass and sounds were spun by Miami‘s hottest DJ‘s, DJ ICE and DJ GREO from WEDR 99 Jamz.

“It‘s a good thing when the only complaint you get for a two day event is that your system is too loud!”, says Harold Cummings, CEO of DBS. “But it‘s easy to turn down; what‘s important aside from the tons of headroom we‘re packing is that the system gives incredible presence, intelligibility, and punch at all SPLs. Whatever the client needs, we can deliver with finesse and complete control.”

WEDR radio station manager Linsey Powell (AKA “Maestro”) heard the Dynacord system at a concert for the City of Miami Gardens in January. Once he got a taste of what DBS, Dynacord, EV, Midas and KT can do, he was hooked. “He loved the fact that we were able to cover large areas with a compact system that sounded amazing,” adds Cummings. “That experience forged a relationship between DBS and the#1 rated radio station in South Florida, WEDR 99.1, 99JAMZ (owned by Cox Radio). HOOP IT UP brought out thousands of local and national spectators and players. The Cobra system made sure the event sound was a SLAM DUNK!”

Equipment List:

Dynacord SUB (2)
Dynacord PWH (4)

EV XLC & NetMax Sound Sweet with Sugarland

VIEW STORY WITH PHOTOS HERE

Electro-Voice XLC Sounds Sweet with SugarlandElectro-Voice XLC 127DVX compact line arrays are sounding sweet on the current tour by platinum-selling, CMA Award-winning country artists Sugarland.

The tour sound and lighting systems are from Dale Morris Leasing, who have had had great success deploying the world‘s largest EV touring system–comprised of X-Line, XLC, P-Series remote control amps running IRIS-Net control and supervision software, and NetMax processing–on country superstar Kenny Chesney‘s record-breaking tours, providing sound for sold-out shows at some of the largest venues in the U.S.

Part of a system design by Phil Scobee of Dale Morris Leasing, XLC enclosures upgraded with new DVX-series woofers serve as the main PA for the Sugarland tour, offering increased power handling and enhanced frequency response. The EV equipment list includes 32 XLC boxes, 20 XLC118 subs, and 24 super-compact XLD281 boxes for 270-degree side wraps. 12 additional XLC boxes serve as delays where necessary. P3000RL amps running IRIS-Net provide all the power; system control, distribution, and processing are further streamlined with EV’s NetMax N8000 digital matrix controller.

The tour kicked off in Louisville, at the Kentucky Exposition Center‘s 19,000-seat Freedom Hall, where David “Hud” Haney of Dale Morris Leasing was present to hear the rig in action:

“I was very pleased with how smooth and seamless the new XLC rig sounded,” says Haney. “I‘ve been at shows in that room probably 15-20 times during my 30 years of touring, and this was the best I‘ve ever heard it sound. It‘s a tough space, with a low ceiling and a long throw–around 330-feet from stage. I was blown away by the XLC‘s coverage and intelligibility.”

“Phil Scobee is one of the smartest audio engineers I‘ve ever had the privilege to work with, and he did a fabulous job putting this system together,” Haney adds. “The EV team also did an excellent job assisting with the tour preparations, and we had hands-on support from EV‘s Stu Schatz and Paul Carelli, who were there at the first show to hear the rig and help out. Anybody can buy the products; it‘s the people standing behind them makes the real difference. In this case, it all adds up to the most amazing-sounding compact line array out there!”

EV XLE Greets Olympic Torch in London

VIEW STORY WITH PHOTOS HERE

UK PA company Blueboxx Creative premiered its new Electro-Voice XLE super-compact line array system in the open-air theatre of London‘s Trafalgar Square at a public ceremony to mark the passage of the Olympic Flame through London.

The bearer of the Olympic torch arrived in London‘s most famous Square and ran down the steps to the foot of Nelson‘s Column, where a stage had been erected for live performers and PA playback of the ceremonial trumpets providing the fanfare for the occasion.

Weather conditions were not optimal for Blueboxx‘s city center debut, with freezing temperatures bringing a light dusting of snow onto their new XLE cabinets. This new company has made a major investment in EV; their speaker inventory includes XLE arrayable enclosures, Xsubs, Xi-1152s, and ZX5 models, with lightweight power and performance from Tour Grade amplifiers.

Based in St Albans, Blueboxx Creative was founded by Domonic Martin and David Glover in 2004, and has handled high-profile events such as the Greenwich and Docklands International Festival and the opening event ‘Out Of The Blue‘ at the O2 Arena. They both share an extensive theatre background plus a wealth of experience working with live bands. With Blueboxx expanding quickly thanks to excellent industry connections, Martin and Glover took the decision to invest in a branded system.

“Initially we weren‘t thinking line array, as we envisaged a mid-market, ground-stacking system,” explains Dominic Martin. “However, the flexibility of the XLE system, which we demoed at Shuttlesound, was very persuasive. We could ground-stack, put it on poles, or fly it; in ground-stack mode, it‘s adjustable from 0-10 degrees, and, when flown, it can be expanded up to 16 boxes per side. We did want a prestigious marque, a name that our clients would recognize, but we also wanted it to be economically viable. XLE fitted nicely into our budget and also into the budgets of the jobs we wanted to do, and it has the influential Electro-Voice badge.”

Blueboxx has future-proofed its system with the IRIS-Net control and supervision software suite running the Tour Grade amplifiers; added functionality includes remote control and monitoring of the amps, and the ability to set up the system off -site.

“The system is rugged and ideal for use on outdoor events,” says Dominic Martin, who will be back in Trafalgar Square with the EV XLE system for the St George‘s Day celebrations. “The quality of support and back-up that we‘ve received from Shuttlesound has proved as important as the performance of the enclosures.”
