OLD LYME, CONNECTICUT - APRIL 2008: Professional wireless monitor users now have up to 100 mW* of power for transmitting monitoring signals thanks to Sennheiser‘s new evolution wireless SR 350 IEM G2. The twin transmitter, which makes its debut at the 2008 NAB Show™, is expanding Sennheiser‘s most successful monitoring system, guaranteeing a much greater range for wireless monitoring, along with huge flexibility.
“The output power of the SR 350 IEM G2 can be switched between 15 mW and 100 mW* - offering an optimal fit for stages of all sizes,” explains Robb Blumenreder, industry team manager for Sennheiser Electronic Corporation‘s music industry division. “The menu control is as user-friendly as ever, thanks to the backlit graphics display which lights up red during peak warnings.”
The twin transmitter with HDX compander can be used with the EK 300 IEM G2 and EK 3253 monitor receivers. In total there are 1,440 UHF frequencies available for interference-free transmission. For a direct choice of channel, every transmitter has eight channel banks, each of which has twelve pre-sets, as well as a bank with up to twelve user-selectable channels.
There is an option for the high-performance twin transmitter to be controlled and programmed via the NET 1 network system; both transmitters can be listened to through separate headphone sockets. The SR 350 IEM G2 is the ideal touring partner. Thanks to its rack mount ears, it can be incorporated directly into a 19-inch rack. An integrated switching power supply unit ensures it can be used all over the world.

PB Pro-Audio & Lighting recently deployed their Electro-Voice XLD281 super-compact line array system for the 2008 British Columbia Winter Games. Held at the end of February in the Rocky Mountain cities of Kimberly and Cranbrook, BC, PB‘s streamlined, high-performance PA handled sound for the opening ceremony, awards, and live performances held in the Cranbrook Recreation Complex, the main venue for the games.
“The XLD delivers remarkable performance for its size,” says Ben Blomander, owner, PB Pro-Audio & Lighting, “balancing sonic intelligibility and precise coverage with plenty of power handling when needed.
“For the opening ceremony, about 3000 kids came out onto the ice, past the main stage area,” Blomander adds, “effectively doubling the size of the space we needed to cover; we needed to cover the ice and the first tier seating area as well as the main seating sections. These two six box arrays combined tight, close proximity coverage with a very long throw; it delivered warm, clear sound to every person in the room.”
Blomander used EV‘s LAPS (Line Array Prediction Software) to angle and aim the XLD arrays, as well as determine output levels and control: “We configured the system for separate volume control between the top three and bottom three boxes in each array. The combination of easy to use software and inherently good-sounding boxes meant the rig was streamlined in terms of setup as well as size–it takes minimal effort to make them sound superb, even in typically challenging stadium spaces like this. The 8-inch woofers and HF driver work together seamlessly–so smooth and warm.”
The stage area was used for various performances and presentations. Dignitaries in attendance included the premier of British Columbia, the local MLA, and representatives from the Olympic Games. “As expected, the XLD provided EV‘s signature warm, clear vocal sound for these distinguished speakers,” Blomander adds, “yet it was equally at ease at higher SPLs for live music, and choirs. The premier and his staff told us they were very impressed with the audio quality and the onstage sound with the truss-mounted Xi-1082 monitors. This configuration kept the stage clear for the dance groups without compromising onstage sound quality; again, it was all nicely streamlined without cutting corners on the details. It all worked out perfectly.”
–Clair/Showco Provides Production for Band‘s “It Won‘t Be Soon Before Long” Tour–
BUENA PARK, Calif.–With five GRAMMY® nominations, a TV appearance on CMT‘s ‘Crossroads‘, and a performance at the Pepsi Smash pre-Super Bowl concert February 2 to air on VH1, Maroon 5 continues its successful worldwide tour in support of their latest “It Won‘t Be Soon Before Long” CD.
Clair/Showco is providing complete production and crew for the tour with audio equipment including two Yamaha PM5D digital audio consoles, one for house and one for monitors. “The first time I used the 5D was on Motley Crue,” states Kirk Shreiner, front of house engineer for the Maroon 5 tour. “I was using another digital console and just never liked the way it sounded, nor could I trust it. So while the tour took a break I switched to the PM5D. I liked it a lot better; it feels like I‘m mixing on a console and not a computer.”
Prior to joining the Maroon 5 tour, Shreiner used a PM5D to mix Fiction Plane, the opening act on the Police Reunion Tour. “When I found out I was going to mix Fiction Plane, the PM5D was my first choice,” Shreiner says. “The one thing I really like about the console is that you can patch your split in the back of the console, not requiring a rack to go with it in order to get your inputs into the console. I like the overall feel, how it sounds, and the lay out of the PM5D,” he continues. “It’s always my first pick.”
During last year‘s leg of the tour, P.A. consisted of a Clair/Showco Prism PA, 8 wide by 4 deep per side. Shreiner used 14 - S4 subs across the front with 4 - FF2s for front fill, all powered by Crown 3600 amps. His drive rack consisted of six Lake IO units with custom Clair/Showco crossovers for each kind of cabinet. For the second leg of the tour beginning in early 2008 an I4 or I3 rig may be used. Microphone arsenal consists of Shure SM57 and 58s, Audio-Technica 4050s, OPUS 88s, AKG 460 and 414s, and a bunch of DIs.
Monitor engineer Bill Chrysler uses a Yamaha PM5D digital console for monitors and his set up consists of SRMs for floor monitors. For side fills he flies three Prism blues per side with four Prism subs on the deck, two per side - one up stage and one down stage. The drummer and keyboard player use ML-18s and a butt shaker for low end. The band also uses in-ear monitors driven by a Shure 700.
“I’ve probably used PM5Ds and PM1Ds since they on about several hundred shows,” states Chrylser. “I have been using the Yamaha PM5D on the Maroon 5 for about six months now and just traveling with a PCMCIA card with my show program on it that I can plug into the 5Ds used at each show. A huge part of the creative and artistic part of our jobs is on these cards. We are preparing all the equipment for the next leg of the tour in Japan and Europe, and having the console settings on this card will save an incredible amount of time.”

Midas Consoles Benelux is proud to announce its fourth Midas XL8 sale to date as well as its first sale of a Klark Teknik DN9696, 96 channel hard disk recorder. Both went to Dutch rental company Triple Showtechniek based in Purmerend near Amsterdam. This brings the total of Midas XL8s operational in the Benelux to five.
Owner Rene Tielen and c.t.o. Marco Hovius took delivery of their XL8 on the Friday and on the Saturday it went out on its first faultless gig with Marc Pardon at the helm.
Tielen went on to say; “We are responsible for some of the major Dutch artists like “Jan Smit” and “Nick and Simon”. These artists are highly critical of their own performance and therefore expect only the highest levels from us and that’s why we only invest in the accepted industry leaders like Midas.” Hovius added; “I am responsible for these shows running smoothly and I do not want to waste time in discussions about what is or not acceptable. Midas XL8 sounds the best by far; it is the easiest digital console to work on and is so reliable that it became a no brainer!”
Marc Pardon FOH engineer commented; “I am the FOH engineer for both “Jan Smit” and “Nick and Simon” and believe me I cannot mess around with their performance quality and I certainly do not want to jeopardise my reputation, so the choice of console was critical. I’d tested the XL8 and boy does the desk sound great! It works like an analogue Midas and coupled with the Klark Teknik DN9696 hard disk recorder, with virtual sound check, it takes the package to an unprecedented level.”
Axel Nagtegaal, Midas Consoles Benelux; “For our company this is yet another milestone and with Triple Showtechniek choosing Midas it provides yet another very strong signal to the market about the success of Midas digital - and we’re just getting started!!”
On March 26, a stunning artist signature model of the Electro-Voice Cardinal microphone was released exclusively for the Japanese market.
This custom edition of EV‘s popular large diaphragm condenser was designed for Shinya, drummer for legendary Japanese rock band Luna Sea. The band recently reunited after a seven year hiatus, selling out a show at the Tokyo Dome on December 24th, 2007.
Shinya designed the custom Cardinal especially for the occasion, incorporating his trademark butterfly motif into the design. Along with superlative studio vocal and guitar performance, the EV Cardinal has proved itself as an excellent mic for drum applications–particularly when used for overheads–and Shinya‘s endorsement reinforces its position as a new standard for superb percussion sound quality.
Imprinted with 1-100 serial numbers, the limited edition model comes in a high-quality acrylic case including photos from the December 24th concert. The nameplate reads “GOD BLESS YOU - One Night Dejavu - TOKYO DOME 2007.12.24″ and features Shinya‘s signature.
Easter 2008 saw the Australian Gospel Music Festival celebrate its tenth anniversary with a name change to “Easterfest”. Getting bigger by the year, the festival featured seven stages across Queens Park in the center of the city of Toowoomba (Queensland, Australia). C.P.C. Audio Pty Ltd of Bundamba, Queensland provided production for the festival.
Located inside a large six pole tent, the festival “B” stage–called the “Bigtop”–featured a full Electro-Voice sound system, including XLC/XLD combination line arrays, QRx 218 subs, and a spread of new Phoenix monitors, all powered by EV amplifiers.
The Bigtop stage also relied upon EV equipment at the input end of the signal chain, thanks to a complete EV microphone kit. Along with a number of tried and trusted RE-1 wireless systems, a pair of new REV wireless handheld transmitters, custom supplied in chrome, made a visual impact to match their superb acoustic performance.
The REV dual receiver was purchased by longtime festival FOH engineer Phill Webb, whose love affair with EV microphones is writ large in his noted collection of over 150 pieces, ranging from a 100EL carbon suspension microphone from 1930 to his brand new custom REV transmitters.
“I have an extensive collection of vintage EV microphones,” says Webb, “many of which are chrome, so having chrome transmitters seemed to be a natural extension; if you can‘t hide it, you highlight it!” N/D967 dynamic and RE510 condenser capsules were also on hand for each transmitter.
“The venue did everything from contemporary worship service to acoustic performance to thrash rock and roll, with the REV transmitters out front for all performances,” Webb adds. “We used the RE510 heads for the worship service and changed to N/D967 heads for the rock bands. Simple!”
In addition to the REV wireless, the stage also had a complement of wired RE510 and N/D967 mics for backing vocals. A drum kit full of EV mics (N/D468, N/D168, N/D868, Cardinal, and RE200) and Ravens on the guitar amps completed the picture. “The mics worked perfectly throughout the three day festival,” Webb says, “and the REV‘s worked faultlessly too, with no RF or sonic issues at all. Another successful gig with EV microphones!”
