Kaktovik, Alaska – June 2008… With each day seemingly colder than the one before, a combination of scientists and a BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) production crew recently set out to document the effects of global warming on the Arctic frontier. With a focus on the plight of the region’s Polar Bears as well as the melting permafrost, the group worked from their base camp in this northern village on the Beaufort Sea coast and traveled by helicopter in search of the highly dangerous, yet vulnerable animals. Capturing audio on a mission of this nature is challenging enough, and in this harsh environment—with sub-zero-degree temperatures and high wind—the task becomes even more difficult. Wireless microphones were a necessity and, to ensure production quality worthy of the BBC, the mission critical performance attributes of Lectrosonics wireless technology were placed into service. more
─Doubles the I/O Capacity and Processing Power of the PM5D─
BUENA PARK, Calif.─Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. announces the availability of the PM5D-EX digital console power package. The live sound and recording system combines a Yamaha PM5D Digital Mixing Console with a
DSP5D Expander doubling the I/O and processing capacity of two PM5D consoles but controlled from a single surface. The system features 96 mono and 16 stereo input channels in a very flexible configuration.
The PM5D-EX system features 96 kHz processing throughout for outstanding sound and response, making it the ideal choice for critical live recording applications. Open architecture implemented through MY expansions slots in both the PM5D console and DSP5D Expander provides further flexibility by providing a choice of formats for direct multi-channel or stereo feeds to a DAW system. The DSP5D can also be used remotely using a DCU5D digital cabling unit connected by a single Ethernet cable.
The PM5D-EX power package is available in two versions: either a standard PM5D console or a PM5D-RH console. While the PM5D features high-performance head amps, the PM5D-RH adds head amp recall capability allowing head amp gain settings to be recalled along with the console’s scene data. The combination of PM5D and DSP5D’s four input fader layers can comfortably handle any large-scale application, and by doubling the DSP power, mixing engineers can apply any required processing to all channels without limitation. All analog inputs and outputs on both the Yamaha PM5D console and DSP5D are accessible via standard XLR type connectors for direct, hassle-free connectivity.
“Imagine using 96 inputs at a full 96 kHz sampling rate without compromising console performance or capabilities,” states Marc Lopez, marketing manager, Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. “With the company’s reputation for providing unmatched audio quality, there isn’t any other console on the market that is as powerful as the Yamaha PM5D-EX.”
The open architecture of the PM5D-EX for flexible mixing and expandability provides the engineer with a choice of formats to feed stereo or multi-channel audio to a DAW. A MADI interface is an excellent choice for this type of connection allowing easy, efficient transfer of multiple audio channels to a DAW system for high quality live recordings. For example, by connecting a PM5D-EX to a Steinberg Nuendo DAW, the system provides 64-channel bidirectional audio transfer capability. Both the PM5D console and DSP5D feature expansion slots that accept a wide range of Yamaha MY cards as well as cards from other manufacturers. Four slots on the PM5D and two on the DSP5D allow not only I/O expansion in a variety of analog and digital audio formats, but also digital networking via CobraNet and EtherSound protocol.
The Yamaha PM5D-EX is currently available.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.─For over three decades, it was known as Fan Fair. Held at the Tennessee State Fair Grounds (Nashville), the festival was country music’s way of giving back to its fan base, with a four-day celebration of music, autograph sessions and photo opportunities.
The festival held June 5-8 moved from the Fair Grounds to downtown Nashville in 2001 and was officially renamed the CMA Music Festival in 2004. No longer just a festival, it’s now a stadium show and TV special (airing Sept. 8th on ABC). With 100 hours of concerts featuring the biggest names in country music as well as up-and-coming acts, the event has grown to attract nearly 200,000 fans from around the world. Simultaneously, the event raises money for “Keep the Music Playing,” a music education initiative in local public schools through a partnership with the Nashville Alliance for Public Education. Since 2006, the CMA Music Festival has donated more than $1.1 million to the cause on behalf of the artists who participate in the Festival.
For the past nine years, ClairShowco (Nashville) has supplied sound and production support for the Festival, both for the night-time LP Field (home of the NFL’s Nashville Titans) performances and the Greased Lightning® Daytime Stages at Riverfront Park, on and directly across the Cumberland River from LP Field. Front of house mixing, as well as monitors, for both venues was dominated by Yamaha consoles: for LP Field FOH, two PM5D-RH’s and two PM5000 48-channel analog consoles, plus two PM5D-RH’s and two PM1D’s for monitors; and for Daytime Stages FOH, two PM5D-RH’s and a DM2000, plus two PM5D-RH’s for monitors.
Additionally, two Yamaha DSP5D Expanders were on hand to supplement the 48-channel PM5D’s for LP Field. A stand-alone rack unit, the DSP5D doubles the mixer’s I/O channels to 96 mono and 16 stereo channels. It can reside next to the PM5D or remotely by using an optional digital cabling unit for communication up to 120 meters away over standard Cat-5 cable.
“Engineers are so familiar with the PM5D,” says ClairShowco Account Manager, Robert “Koz” Kosloskie, “that it’s now become the logical choice for both FOH and monitors. For guest engineers who may not be that familiar with the console, we’re there to support them. And we also have the [Yamaha] analog consoles going as well.”
Space for three additional guest consoles at the FOH position, plus one more spot on the grass just off the front of the platform, allowed for a total of nine FOH consoles. Many of the guest consoles turning up for the show were also Yamahas, as well as belonging to ClairShowco clients: Carrie Underwood brought in her own PM1D to accommodate the nearly 100 inputs her act requires; Rascal Flats brought their PM1D; Sugarland used their PM5D and DSP5D Expander; Little Big House brought their PM5D; and Alan Jackson brought his own 5D with a PM5000 for monitors.
Clair i-4 line arrays were used at the main stage and Showco Prism for the Riverfront Stage, powered by Crown and QSC amps.
Audio and video for the ABC-TV special was handled by All Mobile Video’s Titan video truck (Tom Davis of SeisMic Sound, Nashville, audio mixing) and The Record Plant’s Yamaha-outfitted (two DM2000’s) RV-based mobile unit, The Lounge, with Kooster McAllister and Paul Special mixing.
Staging setups for the stadium were split into two full-splitter systems, as if there were literally two stages (an A and a B stage) handled by two FOH consoles—with two monitor consoles, and two audio trucks (the audio in the All Mobile Video truck being one, Record Plant being the other). In reality, the “B-stage” was a designation in front of main stage where solo acts performed during change-overs for the main or A-stage. Additionally, numerous guest consoles were coming and going, but only three FOH consoles were alive at one time.
The audio remix for the ABC special will be 5.1 in HD.

Showcasing the international adoption of JBL Professional VERTEC® line arrays, Corporacion Dynaco C.A. in Venezuela provided concert sound rental services for two of the largest events held during Festival Movistar Musica 2008. Movistar, a division of the Spanish telecommunications company, Telefonica sponsored the festival. More than 25,000 people were attracted to the production sites, which each featured eight major international artists from Venezuela, Spain, Argentina, and Colombia like Los Amigos Invisibles, Caramelos de Cianuro, Chino y Nacho, Diego Torres, and David Bisbal. The May 8 event was held at the Zulia State capitol of Maracaibo’s baseball stadium, and the May 10 event took place in Caracas, at the Universidad de Venezuela’s baseball stadium.
Dynaco deployed 36 JBL Professional VT4888DP-AN midsized powered line array elements equipped with JBL DrivePack® technology for the main left/right arrays and four VT4888DP-AN elements as near fills. Each side also featured eight VT4887 compact line array elements in use for out fill arrays, and a delay tower at the back of the front-of-house area included six VT4887 loudspeakers powered by Crown I-Tech 6000 amplifiers. Other Harman products in the system at the front-of-house position included BSS 366T loudspeaker management systems, BSS Varicurve and FCS960 graphic equalizers providing options for program EQ, along with Lexicon PCM96, PCM70, PCM60 and PCM42 effects processors. Additional signal processing available to band sound mixers included dbx 903 compressors and BSS DPR-901 II dynamic equalizers.
The stage setup was comprised of several rolling risers and the four drum sets were pre-mic’ed at all times. There were also two complete percussion setups with everything available on multi-pin sub-snakes, which enabled the sound crew to roll out the exiting band and roll in the next band in 10 minutes or less.
Harman Pro’s HiQnet™ System Architect™ software was used for remote control and monitoring of the powered loudspeaker system arrays, along with traditional power amplifiers used for supplemental speakers in the system. System engineer Guillermo Sanchez of Dynaco noted the highly useful characteristics of JBL VERTEC powered DP Series speaker systems by describing the ability to have direct control of the DSP in each speaker as well as load-monitoring capability for everything in the entire sound reinforcement system during the show. “Combined with the Crown amplifiers in use on the same network, this gave our audio team performance confirmation for each zone of the system, including things not in the direct listening field for the technicians, such as near fills, out fills, signal delay arrays and such,” Sanchez said. “The remote control and monitoring system and internal DSP features gave the sound team a high degree of control over the entire system, including the subwoofer arrays, which provided smooth, even low frequency coverage throughout the venue.”
Throughout the festival, Dynaco’s JBL VERTEC line array system received compliments from musicians, band engineers, and promoters for the outstanding performance and versatility of the system, Sanchez noted.
“Technically, the system achieved +/- 3 dB from 100Hz to 8KHz behind the mix position, 40 meters (131 feet) from the stage, with significant amounts of low-frequency output available as required,” he explained. “The system’s H.F. response was measured to be 114 dB at the mix position, slow-response mode with C-weighted filtering.”
“With Festival Movistar Musica 2008, the audio team at Dynaco has demonstrated their ability to provide high-quality sound in demanding outdoor environments for large audiences,” observed David Scheirman, Vice President, Tour Sound, JBL Professional. “Multi-act festival events add another level of complexity to major outdoor concerts, and Guillermo Sanchez and his crew are well-positioned with both system inventory and technical procedures to succeed in this area.”
