ULTIMATE HIP HOP FESTIVAL USES YAMAHA PM5D CONSOLES

billy-flores-rock-the-bells-yamaha-pm5dweb.jpgBUENA PARK, Calif.─Few events can claim to both capture and define a movement, yet this is precisely what the Rock the Bells Festival has done since its inception in 2003. Rock the Bells is more than a music festival; it has become a genuine rite of passage for thousands of core, social, conscious, and independent Hip Hop enthusiasts.

A premiere music experience, the festival was established as a forum of unparalleled diversity and excellence uniting the biggest names involved with urban culture. This year, the festival took place in 20 different venues across the U.S. featuring performances by Nas, Mos Def, De La Soul, Method Man, A Tribe Called Quest and many more, with special guest performances by Black Eyed Peas in Los Angeles and Jay-Z in New York.

The tour has been using two Yamaha PM5D digital audio consoles. “We have about 12 headlining acts on the same stage during the festival, so it is paramount for me to be able to store all the acts and pull them up on the fly, states Billy Flores, sound crew chief and front of house engineer. With the exception of A Tribe Called Quest who is using a PM5000, all acts were mixed on PM5Ds at front of house and monitors.

Without the PM5D, mixing the shows would not be nearly the ultimate experience it has been for me this summer, adds Flores. “Since we are doing the tour ‘festival-style,’ no one sound checks and most of the artists don’t even arrive on site until 1:00 pm or so. The grounds open up at 11:00 am to about 10-15 thousand concertgoers so with the settings stored on a 5D card, I’m up and running in no time.

Flores first began using a PM5D with Black Eyed Peas back in 2004. “It’s so easy to navigate around this desk because the layout is user friendly, and at the touch of a button you can select effects, compression, noise gates, dynamics, whatever, notes Flores. “With the latest 5D version, you have an expanded effects library to play with as well as newly added dynamics.

Andre’ Cholmondeley Adds To Multi-Faceted Guitar Sound With Eventide Timefactor Stompbox

The TimeFactor lets me do things during performances that I wouldn’t be able to do unless I had both hands free, and then some.
– Andre’ Cholmondeley, guitarist

Andre’ Cholmondeley, best known as a guitarist for Zappa-repertoire band Project/Object, has distinguished himself by his uniquely versatile approach to the instrument. As such, Cholmondeley regards technology as a very crucial extension of his guitar. This attitude led Cholmondeley to the Eventide TimeFactor stompbox, which he has incorporated into his sound for the studio and on the road. As guitar-tech for experimental guitar icon Adrian Belew, and formerly Al DiMeola, Cholmondeley has worked with most of the top delay and effects devices available.

In addition to Project/Object, Cholmondeley is involved in other projects including Delicious (a 3-piece psychedelic instrumental band) and Don Preston, Frank Zappa’s original synthesizer player. While the diversity of Cholmondeley’s numerous projects belies his experimental nature, Cholmondeley has found common technical threads between different musical styles and eras. “Echo and delay have always been major components in modern music, he said. “All those bands in the 1960s used vintage tape delay and reverb was always a big thing. With the TimeFactor I can recreate that ‘60s, vintage tape delay sound, but I can also find delays heard in today’s music. So this little box actually takes you through the different eras of music, one delay at a time!

Utilizing the TimeFactor’s stereo input and output, Cholmondeley runs his guitar through two amplifiers. “Since Delicious is a trio, I need to fill up a lot of space and the TimeFactor gives me a real nice wash of sound, he said.

Additionally, since the TimeFactor stompbox boasts a level of functionality normally only found in rackmount equipment, Cholmondeley can now take studio-quality performance to the road. “I’ve owned every kind of delay pedal, I’ve worked with tape delays in the studio, but the TimeFactor lets me do things during performances that I wouldn’t be able to do unless I had both hands free, and then some, he said. “The ability to save different delays in patches and store so many different settings is really unique for a pedal.

Cholmondeley also cites the TimeFactor’s modulation effects (including chorus and light flanging) as unique yet extremely beneficial features of the stompbox. “Nobody has incorporated modulation into a foot pedal to this extent, he said. “Combine that with the ability to store the delays in so many different combinations, and my live performances have really become 3-dimensional.

JBL VERTEC® Passive and Powered Line Array Loudspeakers Offer Unprecedented Performance and Versatility

As PLASA08 gears up to showcase the latest innovations in audio technology, JBL Professional’s VERTEC® series now offers the most comprehensive set of line array solutions for tour sound and performance-venue applications. With the introduction of the VERTEC VT4889ADP Powered Fullsize Line Array Element and the companion VT4880ADP Ultra Long Excursion Arrayable Subwoofer earlier this year, all size categories in the VERTEC line–compact, midsize and fullsize–are now optionally available with JBL’s DrivePack® electronic modules featuring multiple combinations of Crown amplification, dbx digital signal processing and HiQnetâ„¢ remote control and monitoring.

“From the beginning, the VERTEC series was developed to meet the live sound industry’s need for reduced system size and improved usability, while also striving to provide higher standards of performance, said David Scheirman, Vice President of Tour Sound, JBL Professional. “The wealth of options offered by the VERTEC lineup ensures that the demands of rental sound companies and their clients will be met regardless of system format requirements.

Since its introduction, VERTEC has become established as a worldwide industry standard for line array systems, thanks to the series’ optimal combination of high output power, premium fidelity, light weight and easy setup. The VERTEC series offers a comprehensive range of models combining JBL’s legendary sound quality with the most advanced component transducers and enclosure technology available.

Further extending VERTEC’s range of options, each model is now available as an integrally-powered system, using the company’s exclusive JBL DrivePack technology. In addition to onboard amplification, these “DP versions feature dbx input modules to implement crossovers, equalization, time alignment and protection for the speaker system. The standard DPIP input module features analog audio inputs and sophisticated onboard digital signal processing technology. Precision bandpass limiting, pre-equalization filters and automatic self-test functions ensure optimized performance.

Additionally, the optional DPAN (DrivePack Analog) modules add networking functionality and HiQnet compatibility via Harman’s System Architect software for remote control and monitoring. The optional DPCN (CobraNet™-compatible) input module offers the ability to combine digital audio and control on a single CAT5 cable.

“VERTEC has become the system of choice for the world’s most successful rental sound providers and system integrators, and for many of the most prestigious tours, special events and performance venues around the globe, Scheirman added. “Spectacular applications like the recent Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony, the world’s largest music festival (Rock In Rio), the current Democratic and Republican National Conventions, and global tours to support leading artists like Nine Inch Nails, Blue Man Group, Rascal Flatts, Bruce Springsteen, Lenny Kravitz, Seal, and Josh Groban all show the diverse range of our customers’ applications with the system. This is, in no small part, a result of JBL’s commitment to providing top-tier international system users and regionally-focused audio professionals alike with a broad range of comprehensive solutions for applications in all sizes and environments.
