The Music Engineering and Technology Alliance has announced certification of the R-122V vacuum tube ribbon microphone, designed and manufactured by Royer Labs, a METAlliance Pro Partner. The alliance is working closely with manufacturers to evaluate, recognize, and certify products which meet the call for quality in the recording arts and science.
Producer / Engineer Phil Ramone remarked: “I look for mics that match the moment, and a good ribbon finds a place in much of my work. This new Royer is outstanding.” Ed Cherney added: “I really appreciate the added gain — I don’t have to crank the mic pre’s. Electric guitars have never been easier to capture. Trumpet and trombone players have never been easier to please.” George Massenburg’s comment: “As flexible and consistent a microphone in any technology as I’ve had the pleasure of using.”
Royer’s R-122V was originally developed in 2001 and has evolved into a world class ribbon microphone with superior richness, depth and detail, especially in the midrange frequencies. Winner of the 2007 TEC Award, the R-122V offers the optimum in ribbon microphone performance. This product has warranted official METAlliance(tm) Certification.
Elliot Scheiner tested the microphone and made this evaluation: “The Royer R-122V is without a doubt the most beautiful ribbon mic I’ve ever used. I’ve managed to find a place for it on every tracking session I’ve done in the past six months.” Chuck Ainlay remarked, “The original 122 is one of my favorite ribbon mics, but after using the 122V I am convinced that tubes rule.” Al Schmitt added: “These are the best ribbon mics I’ve ever worked with.”
The METAlliance is comprised of a group of globally-recognized, award-winning audio engineers and producers who have been deeply involved in establishing techniques and technical standards that are the foundation of modern music recording. The METAlliance Board of Directors is Chuck Ainlay, Ed Cherney, Frank Filipetti, George Massenburg, Phil Ramone, Elliot Scheiner and Al Schmitt.

BUENA PARK, Calif.─Long Island-raised signer/songwriter, certified rock n’ roll superstar, and four-time GRAMMY® winner Pat Benatar embarked on her first live concert tour in over two years this summer, and both engineers chose Yamaha consoles for front of house and monitors. With six platinum and four gold albums to her credit, Benatar along with husband Neil Giraldo and the band are still igniting audiences with such hit singles as ‘Heartbreaker’, ‘Treat Me Right’, and ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot.’
“This was my first time carrying a PM5000 on tour, and I was immediately impressed with the warmth of the head amps,â€? states front of house engineer Rick Reith. “The separation and panning of individual inputs really stand out in the mix, and as with all Yamaha consoles, it’s a snap to get around. 12 VCAs, complete fader/mute automation, digital recall! This is not your father’s PM series mixing console.â€?
Ken Peden is using a Yamaha PM5D digital console at monitors. “The difference on the first night of the tour was so apparent even our lighting guy noticed,â€? says Reith. “It’s a pleasure working with Ken and the rest of our crew. Both Yamaha consoles have served the tour well.â€?
Peden is actually a living legend in the biz. He was one of survivors of the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash in 1977.

In a demonstration of the power and versatility of JBL VERTEC® line arrays before a national audience, PRG Audio has provided the live sound reinforcement for NBC’s “Toyota Concert Series On TODAY, airing throughout the summer on the network’s TODAY Show. This year, the Concert Series has featured performances by Alicia Keys, Sheryl Crow, Miley Cyrus and many more. The most recent Concert Series segment on August 29 featured performances by the Pussycat Dolls (“When I Grow Up) and Katy Perry (“I Kissed A Girl).
The performances have been staged outdoors at Rockefeller Center in New York City, drawing thousands of fans in the early mornings. Two stages facing each other, separated approximately 200 feet apart, allow for consecutive performances by different artists. The south stage features a sound reinforcement system consisting of two ground-stacked line arrays, one per side, each containing seven JBL VERTEC VT4887ADP-AN powered compact line array loudspeakers. The north stage features two arrays of five VT4887ADP-AN loudspeakers per side. Each array is accompanied by a VT4881ADP-AN powered compact arrayable subwoofer.
As the rental system provider for the Concert Series, PRG Audio drew on its extensive experience with VERTEC products when deciding on the audio components. “We have used VERTEC for numerous projects in the past, in a range of sizes and configurations, and we felt VERTEC was a natural fit for this project as well, said Bob Rendon of PRG Audio. “Since the staging area is tightly situated between two buildings, we chose VERTEC because we needed a highly controllable line array system that would keep unwanted reflections to a minimum.
The powered compact speaker systems feature JBL’s DrivePack® technology, a fully integrated power and DSP electronics package designed in cooperation with sister Harman companies Crown and dbx. The VT4881ADP subwoofer houses JBL’s new 2269G Ultra-Long-Excursion 460mm (18-inch) woofer. All loudspeakers include optional DPAN (DrivePack Analog) input modules that add remote control and monitoring capabilities with Harman’s HiQnet™ System Architect software. “Having the Crown power built into each speaker in the line arrays gives us more control over the system and eliminates one more step in the signal chain, Rendon said.
Since deploying the VERTEC system for the Toyota Concert Series On TODAY, PRG Audio has enjoyed four months of reliable sound on a live stage where there is no margin for error. “These performances are aired live across the country, so we can’t afford a mistake of any kind, Rendon said. “The VERTEC line arrays have helped us maintain the necessary consistency for this type of application.
