NORTHRIDGE, California – In a high-profile, international event highlighting the suitability of JBL VERTEC® loudspeakers for demanding applications, global production design and lighting specialty vendor Valerio Maioli SPA was contracted to provide the lighting, CCTV, trusses and public address for the inaugural FORMULA 1™ SingTel Singapore Grand Prix. The event took place on September 28 on a street circuit of public roads around the Marina Bay area in Singapore. The race was the first to be held at night in FORMULA 1 history, with the timing of the night event enabling live broadcasts at a time convenient for European TV audiences. Over 110,000 tickets were made available for this first street race held in Asia, and a full sell-out was achieved.
For specialized audio functions in the pit building which served drivers, factory teams, race management and the global media, Electronics & Engineering Pte Ltd. of Singapore worked under Valerio Maioli SPA for the supply, installation and operation of the audio systems in four main areas of the pit building, including the Media Centre, Paddock Club Suites, Press Conference Room and the Podium area.
In the main grandstand podium area, which in addition to race announcements was used to support the opening and awards ceremonies for the main event and all supporting races, individual JBL VERTEC VT4887A compact line array elements were truss-mounted to provide premium, high-output sound coverage in the VIP area nearest the podium zone. A bi-amplified, 3-way system, the VT4887A features JBL’s exclusive Differential Drive™ component transducers with neodymium magnets and dual voice-coils for maximum output power and premium fidelity from a small package.
Additionally, the press conference room was served by a group of JBL Control 29AV-1 premium indoor/outdoor monitor speakers. The audio system at the media centre, featuring JBL Control 24CT in-ceiling speakers for background music and paging was a localized system, used to feed race commentary and press-conference audio to the media centre. The paddock club suites were equipped with Control 23T ultra-compact indoor/outdoor background/foreground loudspeakers.

NORTHRIDGE, California – Demonstrating the power and ease of installation of JBL VRX portable line arrays, systems integration firm Daktronics designed and installed a new audio system for the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma. The Lloyd Noble Center is home to the University of Oklahoma basketball teams and also serves as one of the largest concert venues in the region.
Built in 1975, the Lloyd Noble Center has a capacity of 11,528, which can vary for theater seating during concerts. Given the variety of events held at the venue, Daktronics installed an equally versatile audio system comprised of JBL VRX line array loudspeakers.
The audio system features more than 60 VRX932LA line array loudspeakers in a distributed “exploded cluster configuration. Supplementing the main system are VRX928 8-inch, portable line array elements for the upper seating areas. The entire system is powered by Crown XTi amplifiers.
Since their initial introduction, JBL’s VRX portable line array series has become a favorite among systems integrators in a variety of applications from houses of worship and performance venues to sports arenas. The product’s optimal combination of power, light weight and configurability offers a high level of versatility for demanding installations.
“We have successfully employed VRX line arrays in the past and found them to be an ideal solution for the system at the Lloyd Noble Center, said Doug Dodge of Daktronics. “The system has performed exceptionally and provides smooth, even coverage to all areas of the arena.

REGENSDORF, Switzerland- A Slovenian leader in the production of digital broadcasts, Radio Murski val, celebrates its 50th anniversary and credits Studer products for much of their recent broadcasting success. From the modest beginnings of only a few hours of broadcasting per week and Yugoslavian political obstacles, Radio Murski val chose Studer equipment in 1989, which has transformed it into one of the most listened-to broadcasters in the country. In 2007, Radio Murski val made the transition into digital broadcasting and has continued the digital trend with the acquisition of Studer’s OnAir3000.
The Studer OnAir 3000 further extends Studer’s range of digital broadcast consoles with a design aimed at the medium to upper segment of the radio market including private and public network broadcast stations. The operating concept of the OnAir 3000 will be very familiar to Studer users. The wide range of compact and elegant control surface modules incorporates the same patented “Touch’nAction” philosophy as the highly successful Studer OnAir 2000, using color GUI screens.
“At Radio Murski val, we chose the Studer OnAir 3000 because of it’s flexibility, quick and intuitive operation, and the reliable networking capabilities that allow us to connect to other broadcast signals in our station, states Studio Manager Franc Horvat of Radio Murski val. “We did not have to give the decision much thought, despite there being many different mixing consoles on the market. Our years of satisfaction with Studer products made the selection of the OnAir 3000 very easy, Horvat continued.
The OnAir 3000 design is based on a completely modular desk and a new DSP engine. The fader module includes six fader strips, and up to eight fader modules may be fitted, giving a maximum console size of 48 faders. Layout options range from a highly comprehensive engineer-operated continuity console to a single fader panel for DJ and newsroom use or even a PC-operated system with no physical desk controls. The console has three main stereo mix buses plus an audition facility, four stereo aux. buses, 16 mix-minus sends, configurable as AUXes and three independent studio monitoring circuits and offers full dynamics, EQ and input/output routing in each channel.
Director of Radio Murski val, Dejan Fujs, states, “The OnAir 3000 is responsible for creating new ways of understanding radio equipment and new ways of achieving high quality radio editing and broadcasting. The user-friendly interface allows everybody involved, from the sound engineers to the reporters and announcers, to use this equipment effectively and efficiently. The employees at Radio Murski val are extremely satisfied with the OnAir 3000, but even more so are the listeners.
Editor-in-chief of Radio Murski val, Marjan Dora, explained, “We are extremely satisfied with the acquisition of the OnAir 3000 to our broadcast studio. The desk was easy to install and we now have the ability to compete in a very strong European market.
ELKHART, Indiana – Powering audio in a major live sound application, PA Plus provided live sound reinforcement for “Heaven’s Rehearsal, a multi-denominational musical event that featured a house band, full orchestra and five-hundred member choir. The event took place on November 1, at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada.
PA Plus utilized 80 Crown I-Tech amplifiers to power the large format JBL VerTec® line array. “In order to maintain both group and independent control over all the arrays, we chose to use the Crown I-Tech amplifiers along with HiQnet™ System Architect™ software to provide all the required processing, stated Mark Radu, Systems Engineer of PA Plus. “We turned the basic 30,000 seat system within System Architect and stored it as a preset. As we added array sections to attain coverage up to the full 55,000-seat capacity, the system was re-tuned and saved as a preset. The Crown I-Tech amplifiers and System Architect gave us all the processing power and flexibility we needed.
The Rogers Centre proved to be an extremely acoustically challenging venue, due to its massive amount of concrete and glass with a retractable steel dome roof that extends 325ft above the field. Additionally, a large portion of ticket sales were sold during the day of the event, therefore there was no accurate way to predict what areas of the stadium would need sound coverage.
“The system design worked as planned and we were able to focus acoustic energy only where it needed and minimize spill, added Radu. “John Lacina, our senior engineer, did a great job with the FOH mix and was really able to make the system shine in such an acoustically demanding environment. Overall, considering all the challenges involved, I think everyone was pleasantly surprised with the final result.
NORTHRIDGE, California – In a historic application of JBL VERTEC® line arrays, Taher Sound & Lights recently provided the live sound reinforcement system for an appearance by Sonia Gandhi, President of India’s Congress political party, in the Anantapur district of the state of Andhra Pradesh. The event, which drew a crowd estimated at more than 750,000 people, was designed to generate support for the ruling Congress party in the upcoming state legislative assembly elections.
Taher Sound & Lights deployed a total of 24 loudspeaker arrays to cover a total area of 190 acres. The main scaffolding towers to support the arrays of VERTEC VT4889 large-format line array loudspeakers were set at a height of 12 meters (40 feet). JBL VRX and SRX loudspeaker systems were also in use along with Taher’s custom horn-loaded, 3-way systems. Numerous VRX932 arrays were used for supplemental fill speakers, with VRX and SRX systems in use as signal-delayed array locations. JBL 4890A Array Series loudspeakers and VRX915M stage monitors were also used for the event.
Zakir Hussain, Chief Engineer for Taher Sound & Lights, was responsible for the overall event sound design and mix engineering, assisted by colleagues Mr. Ayub, Mr. Mukaram, Mr. Kuddus, and Mr. Paresh. Mr. Anwar handled stage monitor duties, while Mr. Hyder was responsible for backstage duties. Mr. Wahed Ali served as production manager. “Having the contract to provide sound for such a big audience over a large area is a serious responsibility, and our company has a long history of successfully managing projects of this nature for our country’s government functions and political-party events, noted Zakir Hussain. “Taher Sound & Lights acquired its first JBL VERTEC system in 2004 and we have been very proud to have it to help ensure our success on projects of this magnitude. Now, with JBL’s new V4 DSP presets, the system sounds fantastic.
Syed Layaq Ali, Director of Taher Sound & Lights, recently increased his company’s stock holdings of VERTEC enclosures, adding another 12 VT4889 full-size line array elements and eight VT4880A Ultra Long Excursion arrayable subwoofers to the existing rental inventory.
