STEVEN TRACY OF THE MYRIAD AUGMENTS VERSATILE STYLE WITH EVENTIDE’S MODFACTOR STOMPBOX

Currently touring with an Eventide ModFactor, Steven Tracy of Seattle-based rock band, The Myriad, is exploiting the versatility and high performance of Eventide’s newest stompbox. Tracy, a guitarist, pianist and keyboardist, purchased the ModFactor for its high-quality modulation effects and portability while The Myriad, MTV2’s Breakout Band of the Year, travels across the United States.

The Myriad recently released the album “With Arrows, With Poiseâ€? (Koch Records) and was featured on MTV as the “Artist of the Weekâ€? at the time of the release. The album was mixed at Hansa Studios in Berlin, Germany by Michael Ilbert (The Cardigans, Kent, The Hives) and mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London, England by Adam Nunn (Air, Radiohead, Franz Ferdinand, George Martin, Mogwai), as well as at acclaimed Sterling Sound in New York City by Greg Calbi (Beastie Boys, John Mayer, Interpol, Norah Jones). Since the album’s release, the band has toured extensively, playing with bands such as Lovedrug, mewithoutYou, Mutemath and As Tall As Lions.

The diversity of The Myriad’s music requires a comprehensive effects box that features immediate access to customized controls and studio quality performance. “The Myriad’s genre of music is very diverse and artistic and we need to replicate a wide variety of modulation effects to provide the same sonic complexity that we achieve in the studio, Tracy said. “I chose ModFactor because it produces tremendous effects and because its capabilities are seemingly endless.

ModFactor delivers studio quality performance with the speed and convenience of a stompbox. ModFactor also provides an added level of flexibility with built-in capabilities such as: a plug-and-play expression pedal input for control of wet/dry mix, or any combination of parameters; MIDI program change and parameter control; instrument or line level inputs and outputs; and seamless adaptation with a wide variety of amps and other foot pedals.

Commenting on the application, Eventide Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Ray Maxwell said, “With the range of tools available to recording artists and producers, it’s gratifying to see how today’s top performers, engineers and producers naturally gravitate to Eventide stompboxes in the same way rock icons Led Zeppelin and Frank Zappa used the original Eventide rack-mount processors to create their own signature sound.

Sensaphonics announces Economic Stimulus Program

Sensaphonics Hearing Conservation, the industry leader in custom silicone earphones for musicians, has announced a limited-time trade-in program for users of other brands of custom earphones. The program, first of its kind in the industry, offers a $250 price reduction on all Sensaphonics custom earphones – including the 2X-S, 2MAX, and 3D Active Ambient models – to customers who send their old custom earphones in trade. The program runs through the end of the 2008 calendar year.

Sensaphonics president and founder Michael Santucci explained, “People get into the habit of buying the same brand, over and over, then wondering why they’re not getting great bass response, or why they have discomfort and soreness after long playing sessions. We’re the only company that offers silicone earphones, and it’s really the only solution to these problems. And we’re so confident that our earphones are the solution, we’re paying a bounty to get these conventional hard plastic designs off the stage.

Under the program, 2X-S will cost $500 (regular $750) and the new 2MAX, optimized for wireless applications, will run $600 (regular price $850). All 3D Active Ambient IEM Systems, which start at $2,000, will be reduced by $250. This “earphone amnesty” approach gives customers the lowest pricing Sensaphonics has ever offered. To qualify, users need only supply Sensaphonics with new ear impressions and their old custom earphones – which can be any brand, in any condition. All sales and trade-ins are final.

AVIOM ANSWERS AN SOS FROM ABBACADABRA – THE ULTIMATE ABBA TRIBUTE BAND

aviom_adbacadabra_gary-raffanelli.jpgSPARKS, NV—adbacadabra – The Ultimate ABBA Tribute band, travels worldwide performing 20 of ABBA’s greatest hits in full costume. Performing live at various venues and on cruise ships for the past three years, Adbacadabra relies on Aviom’s Pro 16® Series of products for its live performance needs.

In the past two and a half years, adbacadabra has performed on over 20 cruises, in addition to its regular land performances. The band first started using the Aviom gear when, after one of its rehearsals, one of the musicians complained about feedback and noise level, which prohibited him from hearing his monitors. To help solve this problem, a colleague of Gary Raffanelli, executive director of adbacadabra – The Ultimate ABBA Tribute, recommended Aviom’s monitor mixing system. “Aviom is a lifesaver and I wouldn’t go anywhere without this equipment,” says Raffanelli. “If we didn’t have Aviom, we would be spending more time trying to combat volume and feedback problems rather than focusing on our real job at hand, perfecting our performance for our audience.”

adbacadabra – The Ultimate ABBA Tribute’s rig consists of A16-II Personal Mixers, an AN-16/i-M Mic Input Module, an A-16D Pro A-Net Distributor and an Aviom16/oY-1 A-Net Card for Yamaha®. Surpassing expectations, Aviom has become a staple not only for adbacadabra, but also for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s various performances and inaugurations. While the group was preparing for its show during the inauguration of Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines’ fleet, Freedom Of The Seas, every onboard audio technician attended the sound check as word spread about the Aviom system’s ability to be controlled at one’s fingertips and its ease of setup. As a result, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines has since added Aviom gear to its entire Freedom Class fleet and has had adbacadabra perform at all of the Freedom Class inaugurations. “Since we started using the Aviom system our setup time has been cut down to 45 minutes and we’re able to have a complete sound check in less than an hour, which is unprecedented,” says Raffanelli.

Not only has the Aviom gear proven to be sturdy, able to withstand traveling around the world, but with the recent increase in baggage fees at the airports, Aviom has also been very cost effective. “We put our entire ABBA show into only six suitcases,” explains Raffanelli. “The Aviom equipment is so light and compact that we have never gone over the 50-pound limit. As a result, we’re never charged an overweight fee. Knowing that our Aviom products will get to their destination is one less headache for us. All we need to worry about are the drums, piano, keyboard and a few other minor elements.”

Log Cabin Studio Expands with Toft ATB24 Console

pmi-toft-log-cabin-cr02.jpgpmi-toft-log-cabin-cr01.jpgGARDENA, Calif.─Kris Kolp’s Log Cabin Studio (Tallahassee, FL) has just undergone a complete renovation and expansion, nearly doubling in size to approximately 1000 square feet of space. “Now I have three rooms to record and track in, says Kolp, who broke ground for the project back in April 2008, plus a control room, the center piece of which is a Toft ATB24 console.

“I purchased the ATB24 in a pilot program a little over a year ago, just before its general release on the market, says Kolp. “I graduated from college with a degree in computer science, so my training in recording and mixing audio began with ProTools 3 and ProTools 24. Later I had some opportunities to record using an SSL console and a Trident 80B, and loved working on the Trident. I worked on some other small analog consoles, but none that I would have wanted in my studio. When I found out that Toft had manufactured an affordable console, I jumped at the opportunity.

“The first time I ran audio through the board, it was obvious that it was doing something sweet.

The studio has always been called Log Cabin Studio, says Kolp. But the addition of freshly milled cypress log wall paneling on the walls, plus birch flooring, “finally justifies the studio’s name, he says.

Recent Log Cabin projects include a country/rock album with local singer/songwriter, Dan Newman that Kolp is producing. “We’re using several local musicians and session musicians who previously lived in the area on this project.

Kolp is also co-producing another CD project with a locally-based musician/arranger, Shyam, entitled “Lakulish Love. A meld of East and West, the album combines live jams with kirtan chanting call-and-response with the Tallahassee Boys Choir. Shyam, a.k.a. Hal Month, has experience in the rock/jam band scene as a member of several touring acts including Ancient Harmony, Cosmic Charlie, and The Dead Keys.

“Both of these projects will go to mastering, with Terry Manning at Compass Point in the Bahamas, in the next few months and will be released in the spring, says Kolp.
