Manhattan Center’s Grand Ballroom Gets NEXO and Yamaha Facelift

manhattan-centers-grand-ballroom-nexo-geo-s-12-and-yamaha-m7cl.JPG─Room Upgrades Include a NEXO GEO S12 Line Array and Two Yamaha M7CL

Digital Consoles─

BUENA PARK, Calif.─Originally built as the Manhattan Opera House in 1906 by Oscar Hammerstein I, the Manhattan Center boasts a rich history of entertainment, corporate and cultural events. Now, more than 100 years later, the building still serves the metro New York area with two unique event spaces – The Hammerstein and The Grand Ballrooms. The flexibility of these rooms, along with their connection to in-house recording and television studios, allows clients to transform the rooms to suit any style of event, from corporate events, rock concerts, and television shoots to trade or fashion shows and product launches.

The Grand Ballroom blends elegant ambiance with cutting edge modern technology. With a capacity of 1,200 for theater-style seating and 550 for seated dinners, the 10,000 square foot space is perfect for a live, theatrical, corporate presentations and banquets. The 40-foot high ceiling features plenty of rigging points for production and lighting needs. With a direct link to Manhattan Center Productions’ Studio 7 and an in-house video control room, audio-visual needs are easily achieved. The connection of The Grand Ballroom to the recording studios, coupled with the room’s superior acoustics makes it an attractive venue for large-scale music recording of live events. Past performers that have recorded in The Grand Ballroom include Luciano Pavarotti, Dave Matthews and Emmylou Harris.

The Grand Ballroom was recently given a well-needed audio facelift when the facility installed a NEXO GEO S 12 Series Line Array and two Yamaha M7CL digital audio consoles, one for front of house and one for monitors. “It was time to update The Grand Ballroom and invest in equipment, states Robert Carvell, Technical Director. “We had been renting up until that point and determined it was time to purchase our own system. We were doing listening tests with other systems when Bob Quinones of Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems approached us to use the space for a NEXO speaker demo,” says Carvell. “How fortuitous, I thought. So we held off making any decisions on a line array purchase until after the Yamaha NEXO demo.”

“Our president and vice president are both musicians as well as business people,” adds Carvell. “When they heard the musical quality of the NEXO system they were really impressed. It was more of an emotional/artistic thing than anything else. From a business perspective, we were excited about getting something that is already pretty big in Europe and Asia, and with the recent acquisition of NEXO by Yamaha Corporation Japan, is becoming a fast-growing system here in America.”

Carvell said the decision to purchase the Yamaha M7CL consoles was based on their need to move into the digital age without spending large sums of money. “The M7CL is a very versatile, mid-range digital console that does not require sacrificing your first born child. The console at front of house allows for digital control of the NEXO system as well as future upgrades including the addition of digital snakes and an expanded audio flow throughout the building.”

The Grand Ballroom hosts approximately three events each week and since getting the new system, the room has been used for orchestral performances, DJ events, rock concerts and religious services. “We are definitely getting favorable responses to the new system,” notes Roy Clark, Head of Audio. “And, the wedge monitors are working out very well for the musicians on stage.”

HOT NAMM NEWS: ENTER SENNHEISER’S STAGEMEISTER COMPETITION!

stagemeister_logo.JPGANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - JANUARY 2009: Audio specialist Sennheiser is getting the new (concert) year off to an exciting start by launching a roadie competition. The Sennheiser StageMeister Contest at www.sennheiser-stagemeister.com offers entrants the opportunity to accompany a touring band as a roadie. The competition is supported by Sennheiser subsidiaries and partners around the globe, who will provide practical training for the winners. The competition is being launched at the NAMM show and will start by searching for a roadie from the USA and Canada, before focusing on entrants from Europe during the second round in April. The band that the North American roadie winner will accompany for a week during the 2009 summer festival season will be Simple Plan from Canada.

simple_plan.JPG“We are delighted that Simple Plan finds this competition just as fascinating as we do,” said Susanne Seidel, president global marketing at Sennheiser. “For many, and especially for young people, being a roadie is their dream, and it’s great that we can give the winners the opportunity to gain some first-hand experience in this area after some intensive training.”

WHY PICK ME?

This is the question that entrants from the USA and Canada have to consider right from the start. Their online application with a video or a photo will have to convince the jury - made up of Sennheiser experts and Simple Plan’s production manager - why they, of all people, would be the ideal candidate for the job of “part-time roadie.” The competition closes on March 31, after which date the jury will select the two most suitable candidates and invite them to a telephone interview that will decide the winner.

THE TRAINING.

A two-day training session at Sennheiser in Canada or the USA will prepare the winner for the job with Simple Plan. The training program will include an introduction to RF technology, miking techniques, touring and production equipment, and a brief insight into “roadie lingo.” The future roadies will also be provided with a camera and a laptop so that they will be able to report on their experiences in a daily blog at www.sennheiser-stagemeister.com

“The North American phase will then be followed by other Sennheiser subsidiaries and partners, as well as bands from other parts of the world,” explained Seidel. “This will give music fans from around the globe the opportunity to apply as a roadie for a band. It’s certainly not an easy job and will require a lot of dedication from our candidates, but they will be proud of their achievement after every show. After all, they will have helped to create an unforgettable performance for the audience.”

Noted Jeff Stinco from Simple Plan: “This contest gives you the chance to test your newly-acquired skills on the road, with us and our technical crew. If you win, our techs will guide you through your work and show you how things really happen backstage. There’s a lot of magic that goes on behind the scenes of a good rock show. Don’t think you’re going on a holiday here; you have a lot of work ahead of you. We wouldn’t be able to play for thousands of fans year after year if we didn’t have such a great team supporting us thinking about every detail that makes a Simple Plan show happen. Good luck and we hope to see you backstage at one of our shows very soon.”

EVENTIDE’S ECLIPSE V4.0 SOFTWARE UPGRADE INCLUDES TIMEFACTOR and PITCHFACTOR EFFECTS

Eventide today announced the release of V4.0 software for its Eclipse Harmonizer® processor, further demonstrating its commitment to the thousands of Eclipse owners and the capabilities of the product. Most importantly, the new software adds the entire catalog of Eventide TimeFactor and ModFactor stompbox effects to over 500 presets. The V4.0 software release adds the ability to run full Eventide stompbox algorithms and other select Eclipse effects simultaneously. As an example, users now have the ability to run stereo delays feeding an ambience effect while the stompbox parameters will be mapped to the four hot keys on the Eclipse. The new software also significantly accelerates program loading.

Widely used by professional touring musicians, live sound engineers, and top recording studios alike, the Eclipse Harmonizer comprises hundreds of Eventide’s best effects in a compact dual-engine processor which is capable of running two stereo effects at one time, either in serial or parallel. Any parameter can be adjusted in real time using a standard MIDI foot controller or an expression pedal, making the Eclipse one of the most expressive effects processors available.

“This milestone software release makes the Eclipse even more enticing,” noted Ray Maxwell, Eventide vice president of sales and marketing. “We continue to add value and optimize the performance of this superb hardware processor with the addition of our best-selling TimeFactor and ModFactor algorithms. With this update, the Eclipse maintains its edge as the go-to rack processor for performance or studio. Now, in the studio, you can have the very same effects that appear in our stompboxes also accessible with S/PDIF, AES or ADAT digital I/O.”

The new software will be released to public beta by the end of January and will be released to production in February 2009. Eclipse V4.0 software is a free download for Eclipse owners who have registered their product at Eventide.com.
