New York – November 29, 2010: Tomorrow evening, thousands of people will gather at Rockefeller Plaza for the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. The classic event, which has been an annual tradition since 1933, will feature live performances by Susan Boyle, Charice and many others. Wireless First, a Mount Vernon, NY-based production specialist, has chosen Sennheiser to provide the wireless infrastructure for the event for the ninth consecutive year. The event will appear on local and national prime-time television, broadcasting to millions of people.
Aside from the obvious logistical challenges of mounting and decorating a giant Norwegian Spruce with 30,000 environmentally friendly LED lights, Rockefeller Center presents mammoth Radio Frequency (RF) challenges to wireless operators. Rockefeller Plaza is in extremely close proximity to Radio City Music Hall and most of the major television broadcast networks, presenting a significant challenge that can only be overcome by superior wireless equipment.

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Advanced Audio and Lighting Systems, Inc. of Peoria, Illinois is using one of the first Dante MY16-AUD cards developed by Audinate for Yamaha with an M7CL-48 digital audio console at the historic CEFCU Center Stage at The Landing in Peoria. The amphitheatre seats 2,500 with wide-ranging events from national acts MOE, Government Mule, REO Speedwagon, The Doobie Brothers, Allison Krauss, Bela Fleck to regional acts, and ethnic festivals such as OktoberFest and Irish Fest.
The Dante card is providing connectivity from front of house to house left and right, in fills and out fills, and separate monitor mixes when a side stage monitor console is not deployed. A tablet PC running Yamaha Studio Manager (and soon to be an iPad running the new Yamaha StageMix App) enables engineers to provide quality control over the monitor system, cost savings in manpower, and added equipment rentals.
Three Soundcraft Vi consoles–two Vi6 and a Vi1–were supplied to BBC Worldwide by ADLIB Audio for the recent Doctor Who Live tour, which visited nine major UK arenas in October and November. All desks were originally supplied by Sound Technology Ltd, Soundcraft’s UK/ROI distributors.
This action-packed stage version of the cult TV series stars a selection of classic and favourite Doctor Who monsters including The Daleks and Cybermen, with Nigel Planer as ‘intergalactic showman’ and archetypal baddie, Vorgenson.
The tour’s 270-degree sound system was specified by XL Events’ Rich Rowley, who was also instrumental in choosing ADLIB to supply the kit. The sound company itself fielded a vastly experienced team, including Tony Szabo (systems engineer), Chris Leckie (FOH, on a Soundcraft Vi6), with Fergus Mount handling audio playback on a Soundcraft Vi1, and Marc Peers mixing monitors on a second Vi6.

When the Broadway blockbuster Fela! transferred to London’s National Theatre on the South Bank this month, Tony Award-winning sound designer Robert Kaplowitz took advantage of the auditorium’s vastly different form to rework his original soundscape, with a Studer Vista 5 digital console at the control centre.
Portraying the life of Nigerian political activist and musician Fela Kuti had required the audience to be immersed in a soundfield as part of the adventurous production–but at the National he decided to go a step further.
The opportunity came when the National’s Sound Operations Manager, Borneo Brown, and assistants, Matt Berry and Ed Ferguson, requisitioned a 42-fader, custom-configured Studer Vista 5 digital console for the production.
“I had hoped to have used this desk for the Broadway production–but for various reasons it didn’t happen,â€? said Kaplowitz. Of the advanced feature set offered by the Vista 5, the highlight–as far as more

––Pacific Sound & Light’s Challenging Flagship Venue Installation––
Having provided technical infrastructures for three other Glee Clubs around the country, Paul Duffy’s Pacific Sound & Light faced their toughest challenge yet masterminding the new flagship venue, set in a former Jongleurs in Nottingham’s historic British Waterways Building.
Owned by Mark Tughan’s Comic Enterprises, these hybrid theatres host a diverse program of entertainment––from comedy to eclectic folk and emerging and established artists. But it was the enormous width and narrow depth of Nottingham’s main theater, complemented by a ‘letterbox’ balcony with raked seating and difficult sightlines that provided the real challenge.
Pacific needed to source a sound system that would give even venue coverage across the frequency range — whoever was performing on stage. Having provided problem-free Martin Audio solutions to Comic Enterprises for the past ten years, the British manufacturer again became Paul Duffy’s first port of call. “After using more
