Enhanced Surround Sound Analyzer Now Supports Blu-ray Disc 7.1 Format
AMSTERDAM, SEPTEMBER 9, 2012 – RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, will introduce new options and functional enhancements for its SurroundControl 31900/31960 and SurroundMonitor 11900 ranges at IBC 2012 (Stand 8.E76). The SD device versions of these products are shipping with a new 3G-enabled SDI de-embedder and Dolby(r) E, Dolby(r) DD+ and Dolby(r) AC-3 decoders.
In addition to several minor improvements, the current device firmware now supports the 7.1 DD+ format, ensuring compliance with current 7.1 surround formats for Blu-ray discs and other applications. The 7.1 DD+ format has been implemented alongside the existing 7.1 Cinema format on the SurroundControl and SurroundMonitor systems.
The Surround Sound Analyzer brings the clear and intuitive display method of the original 5.1 format to the enhanced 7.1 arena. Similar to the center channel, the unit displays the newly added side channels using color-coded lines. This way, the user can assess the relationship between the side channels and the phantom sources produced by the lateral-front and rear channels at a glance.
The new software release, featuring a correlation display depicting all possible 7.1 signal combinations, is ideal for professional users working with the 7.1 format. The multicorrelator display has been expanded to read out low-frequency phase errors of all channels versus the LFE, allowing users to make any corrections before phase problems show up acoustically or in bass-management systems.
Featuring the integrated monitoring controller, as well as an optional 3G SDI de-embedder and Dolby(r) decoder, the SurroundControl 31900/31960 flagship unit integrates seamlessly into the production workflows of today’s broadcast applications. The units implement all major loudness standards, including EBU R128, ITU-R BS.1770-2/1771, ATSC A/85 and ARIB. RTW’s Loudness Range (LRA) instrument features the MagicLRA mode, a simple and intuitive view displaying integrated loudness and loudness variances within short time periods. Apart from the monitoring controller, the eight-channel SurroundMonitor 11900 implements all the same metering functions from the SurroundControl systems.

The new TouchMonitor TM3-3G seamlessly allows the TM3′s current hardware and software design to visualize, convert and replay 3G SDI signals in TV and video production and post production applications, offering a feature set unrivalled in its class.
The TouchMonitor TM3-3G is a compact yet versatile solution for metering, de-embedding and monitoring 3G SDI audio. It features a 4.3-inch touchscreen for horizontal as well as vertical orientation, which can display any of the eight audio channels contained in a 3G SDI stream. For that purpose, it includes a large number of graphical and numerical instruments showing single-channel and summing loudness bargraphs, PPM, true peak, SPL, loudness range (LRA), dialnorm and correlation. The TM3 offers comprehensive loudness metering in compliance with all globally relevant standards (EBU R128, ITU BS.1770-2/1771, ATSC A/85 and ARIB). It also features the Magic LRA mode, specifically designed by RTW, for intuitive visualization of the loudness range and integrated-loudness parameters.
If equipped with the corresponding software license option, the integrated de-embedder also outputs up to 16 audio channels from the 3G SDI signal on eight AES3 two-channel ports. The output signals are independent from the visualized audio. In addition, the TM3-3G can be upgraded with a built-in monitoring controller license. This uses an on-screen fader for output-volume adjustment, a stereo output and phones out. The optional timecode license expands the feature set of the TM3-3G to allow external or SDI timecode signals to be decoded, displayed and used for additional functions.
The intuitive operating concept of the TM3 allows for quick and easy selection of presets that can be configured using RTW’s Devicer DC1 software (available for Mac OS X(r) and Windows(r)). Using custom presets, the user can easily switch between the various sources, loudness standards and instrument layouts. The configuration software allows users to freely scale and place the required instruments virtually anywhere on the screen.

RTL Deutschland Group’s CBC Relies on RTW Loudness-Metering Systems
AMSTERDAM, SEPTEMBER 7, 2012 – RTW (IBC Stand 8.E76), a leading vendor of visual audio meters for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, is pleased to announce the recent sale of 100 TouchMonitor TM3 units to Cologne Broadcasting Center (CBC), a television production and broadcasting company with offices in Cologne, Munich and Berlin. CBC purchased the TM3s to help meet the German government’s upcoming loudness requirements for TV shows. Schmitronic, a Cologne-based expert provider of professional audio components, supplied the units, which CBC has already begun to install.
CBC initially planned to purchase approximately 80 TouchMonitor TM3 units, but after further studying its requirements, increased that number to a total of 100 units. According to Jürgen Mölders, head of post production at CBC, who manages nearly 70 post-production suites, when it came to purchasing new loudness meters, CBC, already a longtime user of RTW equipment, felt RTW was the obvious choice. “When we tested a prototype version of the TM3, we were quite taken by its simple and intuitive operation,” he says. “We typically use the TM3 units in editing suites. As the monitoring device is a separate hardware unit, the main screen is reserved for the primary edit applications at any time.”
Since the TM3 installation at CBC spans several stages, Mölders insisted on having the first shipment delivered late in May. “Internally, we already transitioned our production to the new loudness-metering systems in June,” he explains. “This means that our editing suites already comply with EBU R128, but for the time being, we’ve adapted the levels in Final Cut Pro to our previous standards, which are still applicable. Thus, we were well prepared for when German regulators began to enforce loudness regulations for all major TV stations at the IFA in Berlin on August 31.”
Jochen Wellnitz, senior sound engineer at CBC, says he and his team are very happy with the experience they’ve had during their first few weeks with the TouchMonitor TM3. “Operating the device locally using the touch screen is simple and quick,” he says. “When browsing presets, the graphical preview feature is truly handy.”
According to Mölders, in order to avoid operating errors, his team decided to use a single preset that the editor cannot change or modify at the workplace. “This ensures that the metering is based on the same specifications at all our editing suites,” he notes. “On the other hand, there are other workplaces such as post-production suites or special-purpose systems where multiple presets are available to our creative team.”

New Flagship Mixer Features an Unprecedented Amount of I/O Connectivity and Recording Flexibility
AMSTERDAM, SEPTEMBER 6, 2012 - Sound Devices, experts in audio and video products for field production, unveils the 664 Production Mixer, the newest addition to its best-selling line of field and production mixers, at IBC 2012 (Stand 8.D74). The new flagship in Sound Devices’ line of portable production mixers, the 664 builds upon the powerful features of the 552 Production Mixer and offers expanded input/output connectivity and recording capabilities, along with greater flexibility and ease-of-use. Its six input channels have dedicated controls for trim, fader, pan and PFL. The inputs and four output buses are all recordable, for a total of 10 tracks of recording.
Sound Devices’ 664 contains six ultra-low noise, high-dynamic range transformer-less preamps that accept mic- or line-level signals and include analog peak limiters, high-pass filters, input trim control and direct outputs on every channel. Featuring full analog audio paths for high-performance audio and superb power efficiency, the 664 also has numerous digital capabilities. Inputs 1 and 6 are unique in that they can be selected as AES3 or AES42 inputs for digital microphones, each with its own SRC for simplicity in system clocking.
The analog output compliment includes four output buses. The L and R buses are on balanced XLR, 10-Pin, TA-3M connectors, or unbalanced on TA-3M or 3.5mm connectors. Auxiliary output buses X1 and X2 are available on balanced TA-3M connectors. Inputs and buses can be routed to four AES3 connections for eight digital outputs on the XLR and 10-pin connectors.
The 664 can record up to 10 tracks, 16- or 24-bit broadcast WAV files to SD and/or CompactFlash cards. All six inputs and its four outputs are individually selectable for recording, enabling the mixer to record all 10 channels of audio. With its dual card slots, content can be recorded to either or both cards simultaneously, with the added ability to assign individual tracks to each memory card.
Sound Devices also introduces a companion accessory, the CL-6 Expander. The CL-6 is specifically designed to add six analog line-level inputs to the 664 Production Mixer. With the CL-6 attached, the direct output connectors are available as recordable inputs, controlled by faders located on the CL-6 front panel. The CL-6 also offers additional LED output metering and duplicate-recording transport controls. With the 664 Production Mixer connected to the CL-6 Expander, users can now record up to 12 input channels and four outputs, for a total of 16 tracks.
The 664 features an abundance of connectivity options in addition to the main audio I/O, catering to the complex productions that are becoming more common today. It has expanded return-monitoring capabilities, with three separate camera returns as well as a dedicated private line communications connection. The 664, like the 552, has a built-in slate microphone and tone oscillator, and includes a dedicated input for an external slate mike. The internal or external slate mike can be routed to either outputs or to the dedicated comm output. The 664 can easily build a private line communication with a comm return input, separate from camera returns.

Sound Devices’ 664 features an intuitive LCD menu that enables users to simply adjust input settings and offers the capability to see how an input is routed and connected when its settings are altered. The LCD display also enables users to quickly activate the individual tracks that are to be recorded. The Sound Devices 664 features dedicated front panel controls for gain, trim and faders, as well as full-size XLR connectors. The mixer is powered by five AA batteries or external DC power.
The 664 includes a high-precision Ambient-based time-code generator/reader for multi-camera and double-system sound applications. All common production time-code rates and modes are supported. The 664, like all Sound Devices products, is designed to withstand the physical and environmental extremes of field production. Its top and bottom chassis panels are made from molded, metalized carbon fiber for superior durability and weight reduction. The chassis panels are also gasketed for water resistance.
Swiss Broadcast Service Provider Furnishes Edit Suites with Latest Model from RTW’s TouchMonitor Range
ZURICH, APRIL 18, 2012 - RTW, a leading manufacturer and distributor of professional audio metering and control devices for studio recording and radio and TV broadcast applications, today announced that technology and production center (tpc) in Zurich, Switzerland, has ordered seven TM3 units from RTW’s TouchMonitor range, prior to the official introduction of the product. tpc is the first company to take delivery of the long-awaited entry-level audio meter. Decibel S.A., RTW’s Swiss distributor, supplied the TM3s to the production facility.The company will employ the units in its newly installed edit suites, which will be used primarily for sports programming. tpc ordered the six-channel version of the TM3, as it needs to monitor multiple stereo outputs in parallel.
Alfio Di Fazio, audio-project manager, tpc, ordered the RTW devices long before the actual market launch. “When the larger TM7 and TM9 TouchMonitors were first introduced, the R128 national group and I talked with Michael Kahsnitz, head of engineering at RTW, about a smaller version specifically made for video edit suites,” he says. “The TM3 seems to meet our requirements in this area perfectly.”

TouchScreen Audio Meter an Innovative Teaching Tool for Film Students
LOS ANGELES, APRIL 17, 2012 – RTW, a leading manufacturer and distributor of professional audio metering and control devices for studio recording and radio and TV broadcast applications, is pleased to announce the recent installation of its TM7 TouchMonitor at the prestigious John Williams Scoring Stage at the University of California (USC) School of Cinematic Arts. The 7-inch touch-sensitive audio monitor has become an integral part of the school’s undergraduate and graduate programs, specifically for students learning about film scoring, mixing and audio post production. The innovative touchscreen capability provides a more flexible, comfortable experience for the students, most of who are accustomed to using the same touch technology on their personal electronic devices.
After spending some time with the TM7 at last year’s NAB Show, USC’s Chief Audio Engineer Buddy Halligan knew right away that it would be part of the school’s recent redesign of the John Williams Scoring Stage. Halligan, already familiar with RTW from the positive experience he’d had with the company’s SurroundMonitor 10800X PLUS—there are five units installed in the dub stages at the School of Cinematic Arts—purchased the TM7 soon after.
“I suspected the TM7 would also be another high-quality meter,” says Halligan. “I played with it at NAB, fell in love and bought it. It’s so intuitive, the design is beautiful and it’s nice that we will be able to keep adding to it with new upgrades and software packages as our needs change. The TouchMonitor’s LRA (Loudness Range) instrument, a descriptor specified in ITU-R BS.1770, which combines the two most critical loudness-metering parameters, is used extensively in USC School of Cinematic Arts’ graduate-level advanced sound, sound production and post-production film classes. In the sound production classes, for example, the students show their dailies, receive rough cuts, final cuts and then produce the final mix. The TM7’s LRA has proven to be an integral teaching tool as the students take their content through each stage of the filmmaking process. It is also used in the scoring classes in a similar way.
Halligan also likes the customization and flexibility the TM7 provides. For the faculty, it is helpful to be able to set up different pre-sets in order to cover all required topics in class. Plus, since all of the readings can be viewed simultaneously and projected onto a larger screen, all of the students can have a clear visual of what they are listening for.
“The VGA output is a great feature,” adds Halligan. “It allows us to project the meters in the classrooms so that the entire class gets a really close look at what is going on with the various parameters and meters. They can easily see the phase relationship, RTA, the overall level peaks, dialogue, normalization—everything they need to understand the bigger picture.”
The TM7 and TM9 TouchMonitor versions, featuring 7- and 9-inch touch-sensitive displays, respectively, provide unparalleled flexibility and modularity, combined with intuitive control. The software visualizes multiple sources simultaneously. It supports displaying the same signal on multiple instruments in parallel, each with dedicated defaults with both horizontal and vertical operation. The system visualizes up to 16 analog and/or digital sources at the same time. The TM9 is even capable of providing a view of up to 32 digital channels when the 3G SDI option is implemented.

Pro Audio Vendor Plans to Establish Representative Office in Beijing
COLOGNE, GERMANY, 15 FEBRUARY 2012 – RTW, a leading manufacturer and distributor of professional audio metering and control devices for studio recording and radio and TV broadcast applications, has appointed Daniel Wang Zherun as the company’s new Sales Manager for China and Southeast Asia. Wang Zherun’s top priority will be the establishment of a new representative office in Beijing.
In 2009 and 2010, Daniel Wang Zherun worked as RTW’s business development manager in Beijing, which has provided him with a deep understanding of both the RTW product range and the market environment in China and Southeast Asia. As sales manager, he will now assume additional responsibilities for developing those markets and establishing a more efficient sales infrastructure.
