LAWO PLUG-IN INTEGRATION NOW AVAILABLE

Toronto, Ontario, Canada – March 2008 … Lawo, recognized globally as a leading manufacturer of digital audio networking and console systems for production, post production, broadcast, and related applications, is pleased to announce that the company‘s new plug-in integration, using the Lawo Plug-in Server, is now available. Designed as a dedicated environment for VST-type audio processing plug-ins, the server facilitates seamless integration with the company‘s mc² series third generation consoles while providing greater flexibility in the use and routing of processed signals–all while freeing the host recording platform from the system overhead typically associated with numerous plug-in processors.

The Windows OS-based plug-in server accepts all VST-type audio processing plug-ins without any modification whatsoever. Installation appears as though the plug-in is being installed to a standard audio workstation environment. Subsequently, the plug-in server is integrated with the Lawo HD Core processor, with control of the system originating at the console. Once an audio plug-in is installed on the plug-in server, the mc² control system identifies it as a “known plug-in”. Applying a plug-in is as easy as assigning it to an effects slot. Additionally, audio tielines are handled automatically and appear in the system‘s routing representation. All plug-in parameters are available directly from within the console.

Among the system‘s features is the ability to use a single audio plug-in for multiple functions–each with its own parameter settings, FX slot, and independent signal routing settings. The only limitations lie within the capabilities of the plug-in itself. All 64 bi-directional audio tielines are fully automated and administered dynamically by the Lawo Plug-in Host.

With Lawo‘s plug-in integration, all plug-in parameters are accessible directly from within the mc² series console, with all visual feedback occurring on the console‘s large, illuminated central display. This arrangement enables the mixing engineer to remain focused on the mixing environment. The mc² mixing console knows all of the plug-in‘s various parameters and all parameters are stored for later recall along with all other mix data for any given project. This includes the plug-in‘s FX slot assignment.

The benefits of the Lawo plug-in integration are substantial. In addition to complete integration with Lawo‘s mc² series third generation consoles, including snapshot storage and recall, installation of a plug-in follows the identical procedure as if it were being installed to a DAW. Compatible with multiple hardware platforms, the Lawo Plug-in Server supports any well designed plug-in and has been tested and found to be fully operational with plug-ins from leading developers such as Sonnox (Oxford), Waves, Universal Audio and TC Electronic.

Herbert Lemcke, President of Lawo North America, commented on the company‘s new Plug-in Server, “Lawo‘s new plug-in integration represents a dramatic step forward in the use of audio processing plug-ins. Installation is no different than if the plug-in was being installed to a DAW, yet the benefits are significant. The system provides operators of Lawo‘s third generation mc² consoles complete integration into the mixing environment, with all parameters available directly from the console–enabling an engineer to remain focused on the task of mixing. Not only are all plug-in FX parameters stored and able to be recalled along with all other aspects of a mix, the system facilitates use in live settings such as televised events with greater ease and minimal latency issues. I‘m confident users of our mixing consoles will find much to like with our new plug-in integration.”

Lawo‘s new Plug-in Server is now available for use with the Lawo mc²66 (V1.10.1.0) and the mc²90 (V1.2.1.0) production consoles. Those parties interested in additional information or acquiring the system should contact Lawo North America‘s technical support services at (888) 810-4468. Users outside North America should contact their local Lawo representative.

SOUND DEVICES

SOUTH BARRINGTON, IL– Sound Devices‘ 744T digital recorder recently helped Willow Creek Community Church illustrate its AIDS relief and prevention efforts in Africa. As part of the church‘s service during the weekend of World AIDS day (December 1-2, 2007), the church presented a 25-minute video update of the resources and support it has supplied to World Relief for its work in the African country of Malawi.

The video was shot documentary-style with interviews of local church leaders and members who are a part of the relief efforts. With the interview set-ups varying and a basic audio setup of a stereo shotgun mic and two wireless lavalier systems at the crew‘s disposal, Sound Devices‘ 744T became a versatile and effective option for recording audio rather than capturing audio on the cameras themselves.

“The reason we wanted to use the 744T was because we were shooting with two cameras and we needed the flexibility to change our configuration in a moment‘s notice,” explains Jeff Beaumont, sound mixer for the video. “Gene Appel, our teaching pastor and on-camera person for the project, would go into a situation wired up for an interview. We‘d typically put a lavalier on the person to be interviewed, but if it turned out there were five or six people that needed to be interviewed at once, we‘d use the shotgun mic. With the 744T we were ready to switch back and forth between any setup required.”

The recorder was used in conjunction with a Sound Devices 442 field production mixer, with the direct outputs set into the four tracks of the 744T, so anything picked up on the three microphones would be recorded to the 744T. By using the 744T, Beaumont was able to provide a high-quality mix with the added security of having all four tracks recorded separately so the tracks could be changed in post as needed. Along with its adaptability, the 744T recorder was able to capture a unique but unexpected aspect of Malawi‘s culture.

“Whenever you go to meet a group of people from Malawi, especially in a church setting, they usually sing a song to greet you,” Beaumont continues. “I used a lot of these songs as the basis for our soundtrack. I knew that what we were picking up was being recorded exactly the way we heard it — the 744T preserved every nuance of sound that we picked up on the microphones.”

In addition to the quality sound recordings, Sound Devices‘ 744T was also able to hold up to the rugged conditions of the various shooting locations in Malawia.

“We spent a lot of our time riding in the back of Land Rovers on bumpy roads and would have to hop out and start shooting almost immediately,” Beaumont continues. “A lot of times when you work with equipment that isn‘t sturdy, you have to disassemble everything and pack it into cases to prevent it from breaking. The 744T allowed us to leave everything in the production case. That way we were ready to go at a moment‘s notice and could just start working.”

The second half of the video chronicling the organization‘s efforts in Zambia will be part of an upcoming service and posted on the church‘s website.

STARCITY PRODUCTION PRO TAKES ON HOLLYWOOD

~Zak Rizvi and Brother Zahik Win Best Feature At FAIF ~

BETHLEHEM, PA, FEBRUARY 4, 2008 – A childhood dream has become a reality for Zak Rizvi, chief of production at StarCity Recording Company, and his brother Zahik, who recently earned the Best Feature Award at the Foundation for the Advancement of Independent Films‘ (FAIF) 2007 Festival for The River on Randolph Street. The film, produced by the Rizvi brothers along with partner Babak Naghi, marks the first time in the history of the FAIF festival that a short film has been granted the Best Feature Award.

The Rizvi brothers have a passion for filmmaking. While both pursued professional careers, their desire to create award-winning films has transpired into a reality. Zahik, who is a pilot for a major U.S. airline, wrote, directed and edited the film with no formal education or training, only years of hands-on experience. His brother Zak, who has over 20 years of professional production experience, was the only choice to handle the composition and post production on the project.

“I gave Zak complete creative freedom in terms of sound design,” says Zahik. “I knew he understood my vision for this film. His ability to create the perfect mood and feel through the music and effects is an enormous part of its success.”

Zak handled all aspects of the film‘s audio post production, creating and recording original music as well as sound effects and foley at StarCity Recording Company‘s Studio Z. As the original field sound was rendered unusable due to excessive ambient noise, it was completely reconstructed in the studio. The score, covering nearly all of the film‘s 18-minute running time, was created with a highly detailed “virtual” orchestra. The final stereo and 5.1 mixes were completed in StarCity‘s state-of-the-art Studio A.

“It is a huge honor to win the Best Feature Award for a short at FAIF,” says Zak. “StarCity‘s support of this project has been amazing and I wouldn‘t have been able to accomplish this without them.”

The River on Randolph Street depicts a weekend trip to Las Vegas that leads down a dark road of desperation, where a chance encounter with a stranger yields one last game-a game where the stakes are eternal. It is the second short to be released by the Rizvi brothers‘ Snowblink Productions, a company committed to creating films on limited budgets that evoke the look and feel of large productions. The River on Randolph Street is screening on the 2008 festival circuit, and will be distributed throughout Europe by Glimz.net-it‘s next scheduled showing is April 30th 7:00PM at the New Filmmakers Film Festival in New York City. Snowblink Productions is currently preparing its next project: a full length feature entitled Anywhere America. To find out more, visit www.snowblinkproductions.com.

A world-class facility located in Bethlehem, PA, StarCity Recording Company offers clientele more than 50 years of combined professional recording experience and the state of the art in 5.1 surround sound.
