
Swiss Broadcast Service Provider Furnishes Edit Suites with Latest Model from RTW’s TouchMonitor Range
ZURICH, APRIL 18, 2012 - RTW, a leading manufacturer and distributor of professional audio metering and control devices for studio recording and radio and TV broadcast applications, today announced that technology and production center (tpc) in Zurich, Switzerland, has ordered seven TM3 units from RTW’s TouchMonitor range, prior to the official introduction of the product. tpc is the first company to take delivery of the long-awaited entry-level audio meter. Decibel S.A., RTW’s Swiss distributor, supplied the TM3s to the production facility.The company will employ the units in its newly installed edit suites, which will be used primarily for sports programming. tpc ordered the six-channel version of the TM3, as it needs to monitor multiple stereo outputs in parallel.
Alfio Di Fazio, audio-project manager, tpc, ordered the RTW devices long before the actual market launch. “When the larger TM7 and TM9 TouchMonitors were first introduced, the R128 national group and I talked with Michael Kahsnitz, head of engineering at RTW, about a smaller version specifically made for video edit suites,” he says. “The TM3 seems to meet our requirements in this area perfectly.”
tpc is so pleased with the TM3 units that it is considering purchasing more units for its numerous studios, ensuring all of its audio monitoring needs are covered.

The RTW TM3 TouchMonitor enables quick and easy loudness metering. It comprises a display unit featuring a 4.3-inch touch screen for horizontal or vertical use and a separate interface box. The easy-to-learn operating concept allows for fast selection of presets that are configured using the Device DC1 software, which is available for Mac and Windows. In addition to PPM and true-peak instruments, the TM3 offers comprehensive loudness metering in compliance with all globally relevant standards, including EBU R128, ITU BS.1770-2/1771, ATSC A/85 and ARIB. Instruments include single-channel and summing bar graphs, loudness range and numerical displays. The TM3 stereo version handles analog and digital audio, while the TM3-6CH version also supports six-channel digital input (an upgrade option for stereo units is also available).

Legendary rock band Rush has unveiled details of its highly anticipated, new album, “Clockwork Angels, which was mastered at Bernie Grundman Mastering. This is the renowned trio’s first new collection of original material in over five years and their first studio release via Anthem/Roadrunner records. “Clockwork Angels,” the band’s 20th studio album, will be released on June 12th.
The recording of “Clockwork Angels” began in April 2010 with Grammy Award-winning producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Deftones) – who also collaborated with the band on their last studio album, 2007′s “Snakes & Arrows.” Rush co-produced both records. The first two songs, “Caravan” and “BU2B,” were completed during that first session at Nashville’s Blackbird studios and performed nightly during the wildly successful Time Machine Tour, which ran from June 2010 to June 2011.
Work on “Clockwork Angels” resumed in the fall of 2011 at Revolution Recording in Toronto after the tour’s finale, with additional strings (arranged by David Campbell) recorded at Hollywood’s Ocean Way Recording earlier this year. Lyrically, “Clockwork Angels” chronicles a young man’s quest across a lavish and colorful world of steampunk and alchemy as he attempts to follow his dreams. The story features lost cities, pirates, anarchists, an exotic carnival, and a rigid Watchmaker who imposes precision on every aspect of daily life. The novelization of “Clockwork Angels” is being written by science fiction writer Kevin J. Anderson in collaboration with Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart.

After spending some time with the TM7 at last year’s NAB Show, USC’s Chief Audio Engineer Buddy Halligan knew right away that it would be part of the school’s recent redesign of the John Williams Scoring Stage. Halligan, already familiar with RTW from the positive experience he’d had with the company’s SurroundMonitor 10800X PLUS—there are five units installed in the dub stages at the School of Cinematic Arts—purchased the TM7 soon after.
“I suspected the TM7 would also be another high-quality meter,” says Halligan. “I played with it at NAB, fell in love and bought it. It’s so intuitive, the design is beautiful and it’s nice that we will be able to keep adding to it with new upgrades and software packages as our needs change. It makes for a solid investment for our school.”
The TouchMonitor’s LRA (Loudness Range) instrument, a descriptor specified in ITU-R BS.1770, which combines the two most critical loudness-metering parameters, is used extensively in USC School of Cinematic Arts’ graduate-level advanced sound, sound production and post-production film classes. In the sound production classes, for example, the students show their dailies, receive rough cuts, final cuts and then produce the final mix. The TM7’s LRA has proven to be an integral teaching tool as the students take their content through each stage of the filmmaking process. It is also used in the scoring classes in a similar way.
Halligan also likes the customization and flexibility the TM7 provides. For the faculty, it is helpful to be able to set up different pre-sets in order to cover all required topics in class. Plus, since all of the readings can be viewed simultaneously and projected onto a larger screen, all of the students can have a clear visual of what they are listening for.
“The VGA output is a great feature,” adds Halligan. “It allows us to project the meters in the classrooms so that the entire class gets a really close look at what is going on with the various parameters and meters. They can easily see the phase relationship, RTA, the overall level peaks, dialogue, normalization—everything they need to understand the bigger picture.”
The TM7 and TM9 TouchMonitor versions, featuring 7- and 9-inch touch-sensitive displays, respectively, provide unparalleled flexibility and modularity, combined with intuitive control. The software visualizes multiple sources simultaneously. It supports displaying the same signal on multiple instruments in parallel, each with dedicated defaults with both horizontal and vertical operation. The system visualizes up to 16 analog and/or digital sources at the same time. The TM9 is even capable of providing a view of up to 32 digital channels when the 3G SDI option is implemented.
